I don't think accents make people sound stupid. Stupidity makes people sound stupid. The one thing I can't stand is English people imitating foreign accents when speaking another language. There's a difference between communicating and mimicking. Or when people put on a French accent for words like 'nonchalant'. Yuck!

im from the black country- about 12 ish miles away from birmingham- and our accent makes me cringe, we all sound sooo thick, and were not lol, we have a different accent from brummies, we talk faster and are a lot more broader than the brummies, but people always presume your a brummie by your accent, its annoying lol,

i am a black country lass which is subtly different from the brummie accent. Brummie is the way you say something, black country is what you say it has its own language a bit like cockney. Unfortunately, i agree that they do make peps sound a bit thicker than they really are.
