I have seen yellow signs on the motorway slip roads that say ' No HIABS'.
What is this, and is it an acronym for a type of vehicle ?

i believe hiab is the make of the vehicle.
a HIAB is a lorry with a crane attached to it so it can lift a certain amount of weight on the back of its bed without a forlklift or telehandler.
they are quite high at the back and are heavier than normal trucks this might be the reason.

It is a type of crane with a hydraulic arm equipped for lifting heavy road and rail vehicles. Presumably it is too big for the slip road.

A Hiab is a small truck or lorry with a one jointed crane attached behind the cab!
