i don't know how it got there but it is from spyware quake, it is a blue circle with a question mark inside then it flashes red with a line thru it. it is located down the right hand corner by my clock, then to top it off every 5 or ten minutes it causes a pop up on my screen saying my computer is infected, duh i know that, because it is the infection. i tried to delete it by going in to my control panel at the add and remove area but it will not delete ,i even brought up all the files on it but it only will let me delete about 80 % of them. please help, it starting to piss me off.

Remove the spyware. You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
Ad-aware scans files. Spybot scans the registry.

You have the option of removing spyware quake entries from the registry. Open the registry editor
start > run . Press regedit. Press OK
First make a backup copy of the registry by
File > Export and give it a name,
save it in a location where you can find it easily.
You can restore the registry by choosing the file as
File > Import, in case something goes wrong while editing the registry.
When you enter registry Editor. You will see five different sub sections.
You should remove entries only from the following two sub sections.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
You have to search using Edit > Find.
Type in the name of the software you want to uninstall(spyware quake). Then click on search Next
When the search stops at a entry. Read it to confirm that you want to delete it. If in doubt press F3 to skip. To delete right click on the entry and select delete.
Press F3 to search next entry.
Search and delete till you see a message search completed.
Then delete the spyware quake folder at the location
C:\program files\

I just recently had a similar problem -- wait a second, it was the SAME ONE.
How did you get this? We got it accidentally through a key generator that automatically downloaded.
Okay there are several steps you can take.
1) Boot into safe mode. Do a full virus scan. Then do a full spy-ware scan. Any findings ... delete immediately. Do NOT quarantine.
2) Restart Windows? Still there? It probably will be ... this is a rare *ss spyware that regenerates itself. You'll never guess what actually kills it. (Assuming you are using XP,) go to accessories in start menu. Use system restore.
+ go to a restore date (using the calendar) a couple weeks ago. Note any programs you installed will be gone. Restore ... the system will restart, and it will take longer to restart ... but once it goes into Windows, it should be gone.
3) If that fails, or you need ANY help, email me at STV0726@gmail.com
+ Removing this lumps of crap are my specialty! :-D

-EDIT:- Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but ending the process and/or deleting it manually won't work. I had this virus/mal-ware and as soon as you terminate the process it starts right back up safe mode or not. Don't try it ... deleting it will make it regenerate.

I had that sh*t too.
Spyquake is a virus. You cannot delete that pop-up by nomal means. Spyquake masks itself as anti-spyware and leads you to their website in an attempt to make you pay for removal.
A free Spyware removal progam like Spybot Search & Destroy or Ad-Aware by Lavasoft will remove it. Norton's Antivirus removed SpyQuake from my computer.
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
After you remove SpyQuake, you will still have "Protection Bar" on your Browser toolbar. It cannot be removed by normal means. I had it too.
To remove it...
Download a free copy of Hijackthis at
http://www.download.com/hijackthis/3000-...
Run Hijackthis and carefully scroll down until you find the line that contains the words "IntCodec" and/or "Protection Bar"
In my computer, it was in the series of line #04
Check the box and use the delete feature of Hijackthis
Do not delete any other lines. They are in your registry and you will need them.
Reboot your computer.
The Protection Bar will be gone.
