Great novel. The idiot is a simpleton. It's not that he's stupid, it's that he's kindhearted and trusting. That's why the children like him. It's one of those great Russian novels that delves into the human condition. To be considered a simpleton is to be considered a laughingstock. Yet folks lie to each other and fear each other. The simpleton, however, doesn't lie or use cunning, so he has no true enemies, yet superficial society mocks him for his good hearted ways. Quite ironic.
