The Kalanchoe pinnata, sometimes known as katakataka, can indeed produce new individuals vegetatively by simply planting a leaf cutting. I didn't find any similar information about bryophyllum (but note spelling). In any event, I didn't find any specific time frame for how long it takes a leaf cutting to start growing, but it must be pretty fast, since it can easily happen when a piece of leaf simply falls on the dirt, and takes place before natural processes remove the leaf. I'm guessing just a few days should be enough to see at least some growth.
