Great question!!! You are a thinker....

It's a difficult one to answer. Our behavior is controlled by us, and us alone. Our behavior is our choie.

Sounds simple, right?

Not so simple. There are many factors that INFLUENCE how we choose to behave. Our perception of the world, incidents, and the behavior of others tends to influence to a point.

Self-preservation (that pesky little thing that makes us right, justified, most important, and sometimes vicimized), self-outlook, level of narcissism, level of empathy, impulse control, level of people-pleasing complusion, generosity, agreeability, cooperation, individulaistic/collectivistic considerations, culture, values, beliefs, conscience, etc are other influences.

The way we are raised and what our families model for us as children has a lot to do with it. What we learn as normal and acceptable is reinforced in our early childhood. Sometimes, when we mature and become more adult, we either see or don't see our behavior as dysfunctional. Sometimes we take steps/make effort to change our behavior for the better.

So in short, WE as individuals control out own behavior.

Our perceptions are guided by our emotions, which are guided by our past experiences, which are guided by the beliefs, values, and cultures of our families, which have been taught and learned from their families, cultures, and experiences.

Our genes and our "ancestral" memory controls just about everything we do. Our behavior is rooted in the evolutionary need to "improve our species."
