An interesting question here - he may well have been the youngest ever United player to captain United (the competition would, I guess, be Norman Whiteside and Duncan Edwards), but Darren Fletcher captained Scotland also aged 20 (I dunno which one was younger when donning the armband).

....I think Michael Owen was the youngest ever to get captain's arm band for 2 seconds (England).
I am starting to like Rooney, the kid is growing (has a long way to grow) but that aside, the guy is a great footballer...!

I think Duncan Edwards who played when they were known as the Busby babes was nineteen he would be very close I think he was nineteen.
