they always were cruel - look what happened to our japanese prisoners of war! I think it is all to do with a completely different culture that we don't understand. They have no concept of friendliness - no such word in their language. Yes, they are a cruel race, and there is no negotiating with them on these matters.

Cod in the North Atlantic is being fished virtually to extinction, the demand for sushi around the world means tuna is in danger of disappearing, however people always get excited about whales. To answer eriverpipe's question above, it seems to depends on the size of the prey as to how important they are perceived to be to the public.

I read somewhere recently that there is very little demand for whale meat in Japan, particularly amongst the younger generation. In fact, they have a "whale mountain" frozen away already.
If this is true it may be more of a "national pride" political kind of thing.
I have no problem with them hunting whales if they're not one of the endangered kinds and it's done in a humane way (this may not be possible, in which case the ban should stay).

Your reasoning is flawed. Governments operate independently of public opinion. Much greater influence is exerted by commercial interests. This is what has happened in Japan with whaling. It is what happened in UK with the invasion, and continued occupation, of Iraq. Big business gets what it wants, and the government knows that the people will still vote at elections anyway.

Why, pray, is whaling any different to other hunting such as deer hunting, or any other commercial process which involves animal products?
