It depends are were in the city you are and at what time. Most gangs have the presence of mind not to attempt a day time mugging or violent act. Although Crime has been on the rise in Oakland and San Fransisco.

I think it all depends on if you're at the wrong place at the wrong time. Seriously. If you keep out of dark alleys and don't walk around at night, shouldn't be too much of a problem no matter where you live.
