It's the original name for the carved out pumpkin lanterns at Halloween.
The name Jack O'Lantern comes from an old Irish tale of a villain, called Jack, who when he died was not allowed to enter heaven or hell, so was condemned to wander the land with only a candle to see his way.

According to Rees & Rees, the folks who were abroad in the night imitating the fairies would some- times carry turnips carved to represent faces. This is the origin of our modern Jack-o-lantern. It became popular as house decorations in the United States after immigrant Irish discovered how much easier pumpkins were to carve than turnips, unleashing what has turned into quite an art form in the last decade or so. This later assumed a spooky touch, especially when the glowing faces appear from the darkness.

Its a pumpkin carved out as a face, and a candle placed inside, and its used as a lantern. Its a traditional Halloween symbol. People put in on their lawns on doorsteps during Halloween. The leering face of the Jack-o-lantern in the night adds a touch of humour yet haunting to the festival of Ghosts.
