She is well known due to her particpation in the reality series, The Simple Life. 1 Night in Paris is an authorized sex video of Paris Hilton with her then-boyfriend Rick Salomon[citation needed], who leaked it onto the Internet. It was released in 2004 shortly before Hilton's TV series The Simple Life debuted, causing a sensation. Hilton sued Salomon for releasing the tape. In July 2005 the suit was settled, with Hilton receiving $400,000 and a percentage of the profits[citation needed]. All of the profits she received from the video were donated to charity.
Hilton is a socialite in both Manhattan and Los Angeles and she has been described as a "celebutante", a portmanteau of "celebrity" and "debutante". However, in August 2006 she launched a serious bid at a music career, with her debut pop album Paris.
