Cordless phone is the one which have a base and a headset. You connect the base to your wall outlet and you can carry the headset with you and talk. The range for a cordless phone is within hundreds of feet and depends on the model. Now days, most popular type of a cordless phone is DECT, which uses digital encoding for the signal between the base and the headset.
Funny, but a decade ago it was really possible to walk with such "cordless" phone in a down town and be able to make a phone call. With little hacking it was possible to make you headset to connect to any base of the same type. So, with such phone in populated area you is able to find someone base and use it without a permission from the owner and for his or her expense.

A cordless phone is the most likely use as it was really the first thing in our homes that went from havein a cord to not haveing one
