it is a piece of land that include the barn/house/stable etc. ON land. ON farm.
as oppose to a building. In a building or in a house.
ON SCHOOL grounds......play ground/black top/field etc.

The farm is not just the building, but the land. You go walking on the Moors, you cycle on a track, etc. You are on a farm as soon as you are on the land owned and used by the farm. Therefore....

As others have rightly pointed out the correct term is ...'on a farm' ... which reference pertains to the whole of the land and buildings belonging to a farm enterprise - 'the farm'. If you were to use 'in' then you would be referring to something you entered eg. a building .... ie '..in a farm house... in a farm stable .....' if you referred to such buildings as 'on' then you would (as I would) be suffering vertigo!

Because you are on the farm
IE on top of the land used to grow crops
opposed to being in the farm
IE planted like the crops

Referring to a farm is like referring to being "on" a piece of land. You would only use "in" when you are talking about a specific item such as in the barn, in the farmhouse, ect.
