I'll take a stab at it:

1. The Beatles - They defined rock and roll for an entirely new generation that had been stuck on 50's Elvis rock.

2. The Rolling Stones - Carried on what the Beatles started.

3. Led Zeppelin - Continued the Brittish rock thing, only they did it with much better flare and mastery of musical knowledge.

4. Aerosmith - I happen to hate them, but they are one of the best bands ever.

5. Black Sabbath - Without them, you have no metal.

The Rolling Stones (countless hits, spawning a different generation of fans each new release)

The Beatles (from a pop-fluff rock and roll cover band to an innovative tour de force)

The Band (quintessential house band...helped Bob Dylan make the transition from folk to rock)

Pink Floyd (politically charged psychedelic rock turned mainstream)

Led Zeppelin (get the Led out...Plant, Page, Bonham, and Jones, all at the top of their game)
