You'll need a wireless router. There are many types out there, just select one that suits.

A lot of broadband providers supply routers straight off, but if not wireless would be the best option if you wish to use your laptop anywhere in the house. You will need to make sure your laptop has wireless capability though. This can be integrated into the processor (e.g. Intel Centrino) or a separate wireless card. The shop you purchased the laptop from will be able to tell you.
If your laptop doesn't have wireless, if would be worth investing in a wireless PCMCIA card so that you're not tied by wires, excuse the pun!
Routers are pretty simplistic pieces of hardware so I wouldn't be too caught up in branding.

You want a Linksys router. It is inexpensive and easy to operate. Linksys is owned by Cisco, so you know it's good.

To set up you simpily connect your adsl modem to the router with the network cable, connect your desktop to the router with a network cable, and the router will provide a wireless connection for your laptop. It should be quite easy.
