Pigeon?.

It depends on the amount of postage you have and where you are based. There are a few companies in the City of London that are a great alternative for local mail. If you only have a small daily postage (£500.00 per weeks or less ) then Royal mail is your best bet.

anybody else who has a contract to do so.
Currently other companies are collecting mail from large businesses, but Royal Mail are still delivering it all. Businesses like TNT and Business post have the contracts with many banks and utility companies to handle their mail, however, they cant get the staff to deliver it to the customers doorstep, so royal mail end up with it.
It is called downstream access and it is why you may not got your bills for up to 7 days after they were sent out. The other companies are cherry picking the big companies from royal mail, but cannot see the entire process through, so they are handing it back to royal mail to deliver.

So even if business post or tnt take your letters, it is still Royal Mail that will be delivering them, only it will be taking longer than if you dealt directly with royal mail.
