Colonized in not perhaps the proper word to use. Spain did colonize between 3-400 years. Since Spain did the same to Mexico and it was closer they sent their representatives from Mexico to the Philippines as well, thus the "peso" is the same currency. The US took control about 4 years with the right of the Spanish American war, which many look as an excuse to place troops there for future US expansion in Asia. The Filipinos fought against that and killed 3-4,000 Americans which most people have forgotten and the US pulled out, however the US had placed it's chosen agents in government and that is why most Filipinos speak English today taught in schools and considered the language of business. The US negotiated it's return and placed bases there, which as well shows the US was watching Japan and as well was involved aiding China when the Japanese were attacking China, however the US was not colonizing the Philippines.
Japan attacked the Philippines approximately one day after the Pearl Harbor attack and soon sent in the troops of occupation. The Japanese were in control 2-3 years until McArthur returned from Australia. He left over 40,000 troops behind and many were tortured and starved and some burned alive by the Japanese. The Japanese killed approximately 60,000 Americans and almost 2 million Filipinos. You can still see some Japanese in the ancestors in the women they raped today there, the ones they did not kill soon after. Spain did colonize, America claimed it had the rights to control the Philippines by it's victory over Cuba across the world, and soon retreated and then returned and negotiated for American bases there. There are no American bases remaining today as the US abandoned them with the protest of the Filipino public and the governments pressure.
The Japanese occupied.

Do your maths. Spain colonized the Philippines from 1565-1898, the US from 1898-1943 & 1945-1946 and Japan from 1943-1945. Check out www.wikipedia.org and type Phlippines for more political history.
