It is a companies objective for doing business. It is their purpose for being. It is their goal for which they strive to reach. It's sort of like their creed.....or the value by which they live. I'm sure there is a more technical term but those are boring. Every company has a mission statement...some just try to come up with a fancier one to show off when training new employees or enticing investors.

Organizations sometimes summarize goals and objectives into a mission statement and / or a vision statement:
* A Definition of Vision in a dictionary: 'An Image of the future we seek to create'.
A vision statement describes in graphic terms where the goal-setters want to see themselves in the future. It may describe how they see events unfolding over 10 or 20 years if everything goes exactly as hoped.
* A definition of Mission in a dictionary: purpose, reason for being; also, an inner calling to pursue an activity or perform a service.
Many people mistake vision statement for mission statement. The Vision describes a future identity and the Mission describes how it will be achieved. A Mission statement may define the purpose or broader goal for being in existence or in the business. It serves as an ongoing guide without time frame. The mission can remain the same for decades if crafted well. Vision is more specific in terms of objective and future state. Vision is related to some form of achievement if successful.

A company Mission Statement is simply a statement of what an organisation is aiming to achieve through the conduct of its business. It can even be thought of as a statement of the organisation's reason for existence.
The main purpose of a mission statement is to provide the organisation with focus and direction.
Here are some factors that affects a mission statement
1. corporate culture
2. organisational structure
3. product/market scope
4. customer needs
5. technology
A mission statement can offer guidelines to management when considering how the business should develop and in which directions. With the benefits of a clear mission statement, future growth strategies can rely on what are regarded as distinctive competences and aim for synergies by dealing with similar customer groups, similar customer needs or similar service technologies.
Example of a Mission Statement
At Royal Mail our mission is to be recognised as the best organisation in the world distributing text and packages.
Hope I was able to be of help.
cheers.

If someone asks you "What kind of business are you in?" and you say with pride: "We do this and that". THIS is your company mission statement. Good management makes it written and common for all employees. But often the written statement is irrelevant to what people thinks and believe. This impacts company morale and performance. In such case people are cynical about written mission statement.

Statements made for specific purpose are called "Mission Statement". No matter how long or polished, it is said to achieve the same objective. For example - Our Mission Statement is "TO PLACE WORTHY BOOKS IN WORTHY HANDS"

A mission statment is your way of selling your company to other people in a few sentances. they tend to warble on about diversity, communication. growth etc.
For example; We believe that our company should be the most diverse, dynamic company possible . We acheive this through good communication links within the company and with the local, national, and international community as a whole.
Hope it helps!

Its a statment of the purpose of the business - a macro overview if you like of everything the company does - but it is not an itemized list or enviromental or work ethics statement. A general statement of the type of business your company conducts.
