All gases, including oxygen, will make people faint if taken in at excessive levels. But you should keep in mind that the mechanism and by which various gases act and the concentration needed is very different. Some gases act by acting on the central nervous system (CNS) directly, while others act by restricting passage of oxygen to the central nervous system.

If we cite examples of gases that can affect the CNS, one of the best is diethyl ether. Diethyl ether can knock a person out at air concentrations of 100,00 - 150,000 ppm (parts of diethyl ether per million of air) or 0.043 ounce per cubic inch (it took me a long time to figure that one out). These gases are collectively known as anaesthetics. Other notable anaesthetics are chloroform, nitrous oxide, haloethanes....

Gases that restrict air flow to the CNS are called suffocating agents. They either directly compete with oxygen in the blood flow, or they restrict respiratory pathways to physically prevent oxygen into the bloodstream. The best example here is carbon monoxide. This gas is very dangerous, because it has no color, taste, or smell: thus, it can't be detected. It usually originates from faulty diesel engines, oil-fired heaters, but the best source of carbon monoxide is charcoal (from wood). It acts by competing with oxygen and binding to hemoglobin, the main oxygen carrier. This results in the amount of oxygen reaching all parts of the body to significantly decrease. Carbon monoxide can cause unconsciousness at concentrations of 800 ppm/ 0.00034 ounces per cubic inch Death will inevitably result on higher doses. Other gases in this category are carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide...\
