When I'm working away on my computer, it seems that every so often the computer would become idle for a moment, as though it was waiting for something (perhaps an interrupt or some kind of system service?) to complete. When I bring up the Windows Task Manager, I found that the System Idel Process is often consuming 98 - 99% of the CPU usage.

System Idle Process consuming 98-99%.

This means the CPU is idle and has no job to execute currently.

To tell that the CPU is free, they have given a name "System Idle Process"

It's perfectly ok. When a computer is Idle it will have a high System Idle process under the CPU, often in the 90's. This is completely normal for a computer as it waits for something to do. If you leave the Task Manager open and run a program, you will notice that the System Idle process decreases its CPU usage

The job of the System Idle Process is to show the FREE CPU %, as its own usage.

running processes or just processes, thats nothing compared to some computers, you can have liek 100 on there if you have enough RAM and processing power dont really worry about it, as long as your not running like 57 internet windows lol in which case your computer will freeze up. w8 a second i have exactly 56 too? haha, guess thats the norm for xp....or maybe just coincidence, well some of it is system software that comes with it and some of it can be stuff that you download "owner" download to your computer and run...thats called application software... btw any of those processes with the file extension .exe which stands for executable file can be opened in the MS-DOS command prompt, not that it matters, just letting you know... just type hold windows button and R then type in cmd and hit or you can get to the command prompt by clicking on start programs accessories and then command prompt then in the command prompt type in "start filename.exe"(w/o those quotes) enjoy!
