Cool. First thing's first...don't ever single the kids out or MAKE them stand in front of the class alone if you can help it lol. Why don't you try to open the class with a Q&A period? You could make a list of things to ask them and this way you'd get to know a bit about them at the same time. Ask them about siblings, what they do for fun, do they collect anything, favourite tv shows, pets, etc. All people love to share things about thier lives, kids are no different. Also allow them to ask similar questions about you or round up some interesting facts or stories to tell them. Something scary or weird that happened, kids love that stuff. I worked at a school and really enjoyed working with kids in kindergarten and gr 1, I was unsure of how older kids would behave and respond, but man...they are so the same. They still love stickers and rewards like that. Hope that helps.

5th graders tend to be in to whatever they think 7th graders are in to, atleast publically. Most of them will still enjoy young children activities, but may be embarrassed to admit it, so only focus on that sort of thing if you can get a few people comfortable. Soon the rest will follow.
