Follow up question: Glad I found this post! I am trying to decide between Portland and Seattle myself. Think I am going with Seattle but what areas are SAFE and affordable? I have dogs too... is it going to be a problem trying find an apartment? What about the art scene? I heard that Portland has these great festivals - how is it in Seattle? And are the people friendly?

Congratulations on the upcoming retirement, and I hope it's soon! I'm a Northwest native, and we have many retired, active duty, and reservists in the area. You will be welcomed no matter which area you chose!

The Rose City, Portland, has some absolutely stunning architecture, and enjoys somewhat more clement weather. It's close to beaches that can actually be enjoyed for several months out of the year. The coast drive during the winter can break your heart when you watch the ocean roll out of the fog to crash against some of the most beautiful and rugged coastline in the world.

The Emerald City, Seattle, is nestled between mountains and ocean, with lakes and rivers tossed in for good measure. The traffic is truly horrendous if you have a 9-5 job you are trying to get to. The Puget Sound has the largest ferry system in the United States, and is well worth a trip any time you get a chance. Whale-watching, skiing, snow-boarding, boating, rafting, wine-tasting, museums, art, and theater are all at your disposal in our little "jewel by the sea".

No matter which of our wonderful cities you grace with your presence, you will not regret it! Unless you don't like the rain, in which case I highly suggest heading east of the mountains to Ellensburg, Washington.

Hi there!!

Thanks to your husband for serving our country and thanks to you for supporting him! I can relate----my husband is active duty Army and we're stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. We're living about 45 minutes from Seattle and have been here for a little over a year. It's beautiful in Washington, but it does rain a lot. The rainy season is roughly from November to March and it rains almost every day. It's a little much to handle, but if you can tolerate the rain then it's a nice place to live. Seattle is full of great tourist attractions; the Space Needle, the football and baseball stadiums, the aquarium and science center, Puget Sound etc. I'm from Maryland and my husband is from Texas, so it's definitely a different experience being on the west coast. I'm sure whatever place you decide to retire will be wonderful, and good luck in your travels and where life takes you!! :)

I would have to say they are both pretty similar. Why don't you go for a trip and see them for yourself? You like rain!? LOL
