its a war memorial and they are the doves of peace,,,the Hollanders had a bad time during the second world war and the amsterdamers in particular, they were literally starved to death and reduced to eating the bulb of their national flower the tulip and in some cases eating rats,in order to survive, and some of the last shots of the second world war were shot in the dam square.and to add insult to injury some Nazis holding out in one of the adjacent buildings in the square opened fire on many amsterdamers 4 days after war had ceased, killing many on the streets very close to the monument,,also there is another monument near to the flea market that of a walking man, this is were the nazis executed a lot of the dutch dock workers for protesting to the treatment of the dutch Jews in the city, and another monument close to that one depicts the site were on most sunday mornings at around 10 am the nazis executed the Jews by firing squad,,so if you look around many parts of Amsterdam there are many monuments to the fallen during those terrible times,i visit the city a lot with my job as a tour bus driver and i have many dutch friends living there and they tell me of these stories.after all they have been through they are the nicest, friendliest and trusting people i have ever met,,,
