It is Nicotine.
alcohol addiction is acquired over a long period of time.
nicotine addiction can be acquired by the 1st or 2nd cigarette

If the debate was about which is more sociologically harmful, or more acceptable, you may get a few different opinions, but there is only one answer to the question that you asked, no argument...Nicotine

Chemically speaking, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on earth and its physical cravings last longer than those from heroin or cocaine. The comparison with alcohol speaks for itself. Virtually all smokers are addicted to nicotine whereas only a relatively small percentageof drinkers are alcoholics.

Yes, nicotine is addictive, it even says so on the tobacco packages here. However of all the drugs only alcohol and the barbiturates can be deadly if they are withdrawn. To try comparing how addictive different drugs are is kind of pointless because they are addictive in different ways. There is a huge difference between the addictiveness of cocaine, caffeine or tobacco to something like alcohol or barbiturates. There are differences in the concept of physical and mental addictions. People are different in how they respond to them too. Nicotine actually replaces certain chemicals in your synapses, it actually works better there than the body's own chemical does. Withdrawal produces real symptoms. The addiction response is very widespread and fast. Alcohol addiction suppresses similar transmitters but the addiction reaction is not as widespread in the population and is much slower. Those are physical features, the mental features are that tobacco does not make the world your friend or make you think you are superhuman while alcohol often does. Alcohol messes your memory and slows your thinking, allowing you to forget your problems temporarily and that can be very addictive to people with troubles. Other drugs like nicotine and cocaine effect the chemicals involved in the craving/reward system of our bodies more directly. So the question of which drug is more addictive is kind of moot. You not only need to deal with how many people it effects out of those who are exposed to it, but how it effects them. Chemically marijuana is not addictive, and coffee is more addictive than heroin. Then there is the feature of people being addicted to non-drug behaviours like gambling or risk taking like skydiving.

Nicotine is very addictive and its worse than coming off heroine when you quit so my doctor told me, alcohol is also very addictive, if you can't get through a day without a drink then you have a problem called addiction.

100% Nicotine, if you smoke 10 cigs a day for a month, you will be hooked and find it very difficult to stop smoking. You can drink alcohol drinks for years before you ever become addicted to it, if you ever do. Alcohol works on different people in different ways. Nico tine hits everybody the same way.
