Because your vote counts for the electoral college - and the winning candidate's party gets to choose the electors that will make the actual votes for president. In practice you are pretty much voting directly for the president.

The electoral college ensures that the voice of all the states is heard. Otherwise, the most populated states would be determining who our president is. The candidates would only need to get the most populated 13 states to vote for them, and they would win the presidency. The voices of the people that live in smaller, or rural states would not be represented. The founding fathers were very wise in the creation of the electoral college.

Every election isn't for President. Every two years we vote for congressman, every 6 for senators and every 4 for President. This election coming up is for congress and senate, not for President. In 2008 we vote again for President. This election is important though. Whatever party gets the most congressman and senators control the country and we go in the direction that party wants. You need to figure out what people think most like you and what party represents you the best. Then vote for them. And tell them what you think, so they will know how you want them to vote...remember, without your vote, they're unemployed! So they try to keep you happy. I write my guys all the time and they write me back. Sometimes they don't agree with me but as long as they are honest and not selling out to some rich businessmen, and they have the country's interest a heart, then they're Okay.

It's because we are on the electoral system, meaning that all of the votes in your state go based on how the vote is percentage wise in your state. Check out the 2 sites for more info

The founding fathers came up with this method to try to extrapolate for all the people who lived too far away from any polls. It needs to be scrapped.
