Two years ago (or thereabouts), the World Health Organization released a study which stated that, in order to sustain human life and consumption over the next twenty years, we would require THREE PLANET EARTHS!! Just today it was estimated that the United States alone has surpassed the 300 MILLION MARK in population!! It is conceivable, and highly likely that greed and hunger and global conflict will be a natural result of such a catastrophic scenario--we have been seeing the initial shortages for quite a while now, chiefly with petroleum and gasoline products! Shouldn't we start acting NOW to prepare for those inevitable outcomes??! Why are we choosing to ignore the issue, instead of facing it head-on! I don't know if banning childbirth is the answer, but isn't it incumbent on us to AT LEAST DO SOMETHING??!!

you are right, of course, but legislation is not a possibility in today's world, neither is forced semi sterilization of every human on earth.
the only way is education and changing of customs.
population explosion stopped in 2 places on earth - Europe, where population is dropping through social customs, and Africa where Aids kills so many.
the European option is not relevant to 3rd world countries, and Aids is too painful.

Its interesting that you make out legislation as change. The legislation conservatives trying to put in place are laws to "conserve" what has been with marriage and pregnancy. The US has always acknowledged marriage between a man and a woman until recently. The US also viewed abortion as another version of murder and until the mid 1900's, when it was allowed. It is true conservatives want a smaller government, especially when the government limits what you can or can not do. But abortion and gay-marriages were never rights according to conservatives, so according to conservativess they wanted to conserve social policies. On a federal level, conservatives believe that the government should have limited control. According to them the local government can't tell you, you need a permit to build a shed or put a fence on your lawn. At the federal level, the government can't demand taxes too much. These are just examples.
