I dont think it was specific; in the 1960's people were into all sorts of spiritual things, specifically Eastern ideas (Buddhism, transcendental meditation, psychedelic drugs, drum circles). Remember that these are fictional characters. Seldom do people who enjoyed and took part in that era end up as "burned out" (see Jim from the series Taxi) as dharma's father. I think that dharma's mother also entertained pagan notions such as wicca.

Look up Bodie(sp?) Dharma. I believe he started Buddhism. That should give you a bit of insight.

It's just a TV show. The script-people aren't that smart. Besides, it might turn out to be not so politically correct later on so they just don't specify.
