First off, you don't start a career to "be yourself". You start a career to make money. Hopefully in something that you can at least believe in, but the focus of a corporation is to make money, first for it's stock holders, and second for it's employees. If you truely want a job where you can be yourself, then you really should look into consultiing or starting your own business.

Many companies claim to have a "friendly culture" or "honor family values", but at the end of the day, if they're not making money, they can't pay you to work for them.

IN a few isolated cases, sometimes the two can coincide -- many who work for Apple or Google swear by the company and claim that their individuality and/or differences are appreciated. Not knowing them personally, I can't comment. But I can say that this is a rarity that is likely limited to companies that provide a product or service that sells itself.

A career is what you do. It's not what you are. If you're confusing the two, then either the company you're working for is TOO restrictive (and some are) or you're not finding enough interesting things to do with your free time.

As said above, if this is really an issue for you, consider working for yourself -- then you can decide how much time should be devoted to what you "should do" versus what you "want to do"; if you're lucky, you'll find a good balance and it will be one of the most rewarding things you can ever do with your life. If you're unlucky, you may just find yourself envying those working for the "corporate cause".

Find a company that you feel you can work for, a good and ethical company and get a job with them, even low level entry position and just be yourself. If they don't like that then move on.

One of the most intelligent people I know worked for 6 years as a greeter for a supermarket because they let her be who she wanted to be and she was happy doing that.

As long as you don't mind the money aspect of things then you can be yourself anywhere you choose.
