You'd probably get a decent set for £300.

I am a guitarist, and we have to spend thousands as well. You are going to have to drop a couple grand for a decent drum set. If you wanna play in a band you have to bring a lot more too. Playing music isn't for the half-hearted. If you want it you'll find a way, just like I did, you have to put an initial investment in. I dropped 2 G's on the guitar and about $900 on the amp, then the pedals were about 100 each. The money sucks at first, and I am sure it sucks for drummers too, but keep bangin on those things. It may pay off one day. I keep rockin!

For anything decent- at least $500 USD for a 5 piece kit, and then at least another $300 for decent cymbals (hihat, ride, 1 crash) You can get cheaper kits, but you get what you pay for usually.
