You are totally right but when arranging a holiday in another country we aren't usually offered this option..I agree staying with locals would give a much better insight to life in that country they could also advise honestly on all aspects ..wheres good to eat ..visit...where to buy petrol etc the list is endless...maybe local tourist boards should start promoting local accommodation...

(1) because a lot of people aren't tourists to see the "real" culture, but to see the sites that "their culture" says that they should see, and (2) because these alternatives aren't advertised or promoted in the same manner -- if I can set up guaranteed hotel rooms for the specific dates I have in mind, why would I take the risk of trying to find something once I arrived?
If there were a better system for contacting people and hostels willing to take tourists, it would help some, especially with students and those on a budget. But many tourists want to "visit" without leaving their "amenities".

Jay, if you're coming to Canada there aren't a whole lot of folks who will open their doors to a stranger unless they're in the hospitality business. Probably aren't many in the US either.
I know what you mean though. When I was in Pakistan a few years back, I was introduced to that exact concept. People I met and did business with couldn't understand why I would spend $300.00 a night at the hotel when I was welcome in many homes. I guess it's a cultural thing. Folks in South Asia are a lot more hospitable than in the west.

Most people feel uncomfortable staying in other people's houses. You could open a Bed and Breakfast though

Because with choosing a "star" hotel, you know what you're getting for your money. As for a B&B type, you just never know. You take your chances.

i completely agree with you.
this gives us the true essence of travelling, we can get close to the culture and quintessential day-to-day flavor of the place. this wud oderwise have been totally unnoticeable.
for me travelling is knowing the place and culture intrinsicly, i dont wana feel like home, i wana feel different and nomadic.
