There's a lot of freeware around, just find a freeware site and click download. But becareful some freewares have adware and spyware, and some freeware aren't that good. There are some really good freeware such as Nvu and the GIMP (like adobe photoshop but free).
Look for the term "Freeware".

The majority of Free (as in Open-Source) software is available at SourceForge ( http://www.sourceforge.net ), but you'll have to sift through the hundreds (if not thousands) of projects to find something that you're interested in trying out... However, the site does have categories to help you to sift through all the software projects on the site.
For Office work, Open Office ( http://www.openoffice.org ) should do the trick.
