Jazz trios do not count, so Dave Brubeck fans can stand down. Nor do vocal trios that had backup bands, so Diana Ross fans can relax. I am looking for a trio of musicians that (a) did not change composition and (b) lasted more than five years.

So far we have Genesis (post Gabriel departure), ZZ Top, Green Day and (maybe) the Police. Any others?

Yes, Atticus you are right. Quartets will not count as trios.

I am not certain, but I believe that The Jam (Paul Weller, Rick Buckler, and Bruce Foxton) lasted five years or so. They should have, anyway.
As for the Dave Brubeck reference, he is thought of more in terms of a quartet, isn't he? Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on saxaphone, plus a drummer and a bass player whose names, unfortunately, escape me at the moment.
