I work for a large newspaper group in the Midlands, and circulation is down and falling, we are told this is the same Industry wide. However the company profits are up, they have diversified in some areas such as Internet and a regional magazine. I think we will be around for a long time yet as long as we keep up with current trends, after all they said the same kind of things when television came out.

no I dont think so, their are still a mass amount of people who would much rather read a news paper, especially the older crowd. Many people are on the go and not readily available to sit in front of a tv or a computer. Also many of the news papers have been around for a long time and are very credible. The web has alot of good news too, but a lot of bad news as well. It is hard to distinugish from the two.

No I do not think newspapers or magazines are becoming a thing of the past.
The web may be more acccesable but you cant just stuff your computor in your handbag just to read the news.
The good old newspaper will continue to live however the magazines have a poor shelf life no pun intended. There are to many of the same magazines on the shelf we are in overload and they have turned in to reality television with their "My wife ran off with an alien called Allen" type of thing and I for one do not buy those type of magazine.
Magazines some of them and papers are needed for all sorts my mom lines the the dog kennel with newspaper we also wrapp stuff up in it and also they are of value when they are kept over a period of time especially if they have important life shanging things in it such as death of Diane ect. Give me a good newspaper, cup of coffe any day.

There is too much convienence in holding a medium in your hand(s) and laptops and even "multi-function cell phones" are just to cumbersome or small for regular use.

I do think that papers/magazines that you pay for are going to have to re-asses their focus -- when I can get good reporting for free if I just wait the X minutes to get home, why am I going to pay Y for your service? Yes, some money for the convienence of reading it on the subway, etc. But how much? If the coverage/bias/whatever is the same, not much; but if I get something extra, I would likely pay more.

The real crunch for print media will come when a computer can be imprinted within the fibers of the paper itself -- I buy one and it can update itself everyday; and if it weighs the same as a regular newspaper, then the cumbersome aspect goes away. But even then, they can survive if they focus on specialized content, exclusives, etc.

Too many companies seem focused on slowing the release of new technology, rather than seeing how they can capitalize on it. If the newspapers and magazines had embraced the web initially, as opposed to ignoring or actively avoiding it, do you really think blogs would be as popular? As a rule, they're (blogs) poorly written or frightenly narrowly focused... not good for true "news" at all -- at least if you limit yourself to one or two (though some say the same of the print media). But because they positioned themselves before the print media caught on, they're not going away.

I believe that the importance of news papers as the major source of information is passed.
I think that web papers are much more accessible and easier to use, but, not everyone has easy access to the web. Therefore I believe that papers are not going to disappear in the near future.

They won't be a thing of the past as long as there are some of us who like to do the crossword puzzles. I think people still like to have something in their hand. But who knows? As laptops become less expensive more people will have them and eventually the newspapers and magazines might become obsolete. I think that is somewhere in the distant future though.

depends what paper, if its full of crap like the sun or daily mirror then i dont really care, they purposely build people up only to hopefully oneday making a story to destroy them, 90% of what you read is rubbish, i havent purchased a paper since lady di died.. Magazines i think will always be around in reception areas etc. Local papers are good for jobless people but 6 pages or debbies massage home visiting. what is this world coming to? you cant sell yourself on a street corner but advertise in a national paper? off topic a bit but i got the hump this morning ;) great question anyway!

Newspapers and mags will always be relevant. They have their own edge over print and electronic media as well as the web. I subscribe to newspapers and mags, and I still get a thrill from reading them
They have special editorials and reports. Their reporters often do undercover assignments and expose rot in society and highlight other societal ills and areas of special mention.
Most have specials interests like beauty and fashion, electronics, automobiles, education etc.

They`ll continue. People like the paper in their hands. But paper and magazines might need to start to change some of their tactics. I notice alot more freebies are given currently.

I think that newspapers will still be going, but the internet has somewhat taken over the newspaper world. Some newspapers have even got websites where you just read them there instead of purchasing the acctual paper.
