I don't have a child with a Wilm's tumour. However I can hopefully provide you with some information.

Start with the wiki page - it's pretty much easy to read. The Yale - New Haven Hospital page (YNHH) is pretty good too.

Then talk with your doctor and talk with your pastor.

God sends things that try our strength, but He gives strength to get through.

Synopsis:

Wilm's tumor is a cancer of the kidney. It is uncommon, but of childhood cancers (all of which are uncommon) it is the most common.

Like other cancers - it grows slowly and silently and can be difficult to spot early on. The chances of cure are best if it is detected early.

Treatment includes:
surgery - operation to take out the affected kidney
chemotherapy - giving cytotoxic (cell killing) medicines that can go all around the body and kill the cancer cells - but will often have some effect on the body and make the patient unwell too
radiotherapy - using highly focussed x-ray beam to kill the cancer cells.

In the early stages, surgery may be all that is needed.

In later stages with poorer outcome, the other modalities will be needed too.

Good 5 year survival for stage III (Excellent for stage I and II)

That is very tough for a mother to go through. I know how you feel and understand your hurt. Please remember that it is NOT your fault.

Have the doctor's given you any prognosis yet? Or has your son been put on a waiting list for a new kidney or been through dialysis.

I suspect you are just hoping for good news. please feel free to email me if you want to talk or you can use I.M.

I know a woman whose son had cancer. He is now in his teens and doing great.
Best of luck to you.
