As Petrel said - do you have asthma? Because contrary to what most people think, the first signs of uncontrolled asthma are usually waking at night with a persistent cough - not gasping for breath. I would get to your doctor and explain your symptoms. If you do have asthma then the sooner you get some meds the better, and sleeping in a cold room will generally make you cough (your airways are extra sensitive) so you might have to stick your head under the covers where the air is warmer to breathe.

Hope you are ok soon.

it could be an allergy to something in your bedroom - smokers cough tends to be in the morning when you start smoking again after a 7 or 8 hour break not at night, the mucous causing smokers cough builds up at night when your asleep and not smoking not during the day when you are so you aren't suffering from smokers cough as it would be a problem in the morning not at night - however an allergy to something in your bedroom will effect you at night when you enter the room and could be something as simple as the washing powder you use on the bedspread, or you could have a dust mite infestation that is causing the coughing and need a new mattress after thouroughly cleaning the room to kill them off if it is mites this doesn't mean your dirty its just means you have picked them up while out and about and they have multiplied, also it could be fleas especially if you have pets. - try sleeping in a different room to see if it is a problem with that room and if it is then you can solve it

Take 2-3 nos. of black pepper whenever you have cough. You will feel the difference. Whatever cough syrup you take, cough will remain for 4-5 days.
Also take one table spoon of honey with one table spoon of ginger juice 3-4 times a day. This is a good for cough. Do not take any cold drinks

Do not forget to carry few numbers of black pepper with you whenever you go out. This will help you to avoid coughing in front of others.

Best options, consult nearest homoeopath for medicines e.g.
Senega 30, Causticum30, which will render the yellow phlegm
non-sticky, nongluish in nature , and reflexes become very soft, non irritative and more voluntary.
Use Hyocyamus 30 with prior consultation, it will prevent coughing reflexes at night , without any toxic effect will give you a very sound sleep.

Turn the heating off in your bedroom for a start, prop up your pillows ,don`t ,I think when you get too hot it starts you off,I find a couple of paracetamol helps you sleep,I think it is the change of environment that starts it off try going to bed a little earlier with a good book ,

Try sleeping on more pillows to raise your head above your chest, this might help with any reflux or mucus that is resting on your chest.
Make sure your room is well ventilated. Avoid eating before you go to bed. If you smoke, stop.
You should also go to your doctor to get a check up.

Maybe your room is too cold or you are allergic to something in the air. Do you have asthma? I normally wouldn't recommend cough syrup but you seem to be at your " wits end". Can you get some benedryl.

Hope you feel better soon.

Use any cough medicine that you have.

Also, drink plenty of water and eat a couple of spoonfuls of honey, it sounds wierd but works!

Also, I use lots of pillows so that in the morning, I don't wake up couighing and spluttering.

Good Luck and hope you get better soon.

Well until you go to your doctor try a Hot Tottie, a small shot of liquor with a table spoon of honey and squeeze lemon juice made as a hot tea. Drink it slowly and youll be able to sleep. It worked for me.
