Debuting as test cricket team at Lord's, England on 25 June 1932, the Indian cricket team became the sixth Test playing team. For nearly fifty years, India was weaker than most of the other Test cricket teams, such as Australia and England, winning only 35 of the 196 matches it played during this period.[2] The team gained strength near the end of the 50-year period with the emergence of players such as Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev and the Indian spin quartet. The Indian team has continued to be highly ranked since then in both Test cricket and One-day Internationals. The team won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and was runners-up in 2003. The current team contains many of the world's leading players, including Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, who hold numerous cricketing world records.[3][1]. As of October 2006, the team is ranked fourth in the ICC Test Championship[4] and in a 3-way tie for third place in the ICC ODI Championship[5]

Since cricket is a game of un certainities as has been proved on many occasions in the past, nothing can be predicted for sure about the outcome of a tournament which will be held after few months.

The composition of the players for each team is not yet know. No one knows at present who are the players representing each country and whether the present players will be able to sustain their current form when the world cup starts. The outcome of a match will depend upon the performance of the players on the given date.

While considering the present trend Australia are hot favourites to win the tournament, teams like South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and even New Zeland are capable to causing upsets and winning the tournament.

Since cricket is a game of uncertainties as has been proved on number of occasions, nothing can be predicted for sure about the final result of the World Cup. Even considering the current form of teams, winner of the World Cup cannot be predicted as the final outcome will depend upon the performance during the world cup and not the current form. As it stands now all the top 8 teams stand a chance to win the world cup. Whichever team plays to their potential consistently during the world cup will be the ultimate winners of the world cup

Australia.
I think it terms of consistency, it has to be Australia as favourites. They have probably the strongest bowling attack in the world. McGrath (332 wickets) is probably the best line and length bowler in the world, & Lee (249 wickets) still one of the fastest bowlers in the world, will form the backbone of the attack, and will probably be joined by Johnson (9 wickets in 7) a dangerous left armer who is capable of 150km+ and swings the ball both ways, and Watson (44 wickets) who is a very capable all-rounder, and can also top 150km. They will be backed by Hogg or Cullen who are both good spinners.
Gilchrist (393 dismissals) needs no introduction as Keeper, and scores at a strike rate of 96!
The batting line up, although not having been repeating the heroics of the 2000-2004 period, are still one of the best in the world, and seasoned campaigners are being replaced by the likes of dynamo Hussey (averages 81.75 and has 1300 runs of 43 matches) who is now the highest rated ODI batsman in the world. He is joined by captain Ponting (ave 42.04 / sr 79.32) who is closing in on 10000 and is probably one of the best ODI batsmen of all time, Martyn (ave 39.88 / sr 78.15) a great mainstay, Clarke (ave 44.17 / sr 84.22) one of the stars of the next decade, and Symonds (batting ave 38.75 /sr 91.68, bowling ave 36.47) an incredible athlete who is dangerous as a fielder, batsman or bowler.
There is also Katich, Hayden, Bracken, Hodge, and Haddin.
It all points to Australia having a very, very good chance of winning back to back world cups again, and if someone else is to win they will know they are going to have to play their skins off!
