Contrary to popular belief, no, Rose and Sharon are not dead. They're just still trapped in Alessa's alternate dimension. Here's what happened:

There are three parts of Alessa:

- Alessa (the original body)

- Good Alessa (Sharon)

- Dark Alessa ("The Demon")

Sharon and Dark Alessa are basically physical manifestations of the two sides of Alessa - the good side and the evil side. As for how Alessa created these physical manifestations (and the alternate dimensions), it can only be assumed that she possessed some kind of supernatural power (possibly telekinetic and/or psionic powers, which would obviously lead everyone associated with the cult to call her a witch). Assuming this is true, the ending goes as follows:

1) Dark Alessa (aka - "The Demon") does not, in fact, take over or possess Sharon. Dark Alessa simply recombines with Good Alessa (Sharon), creating a new "reincarnated" Alessa.

2) Alessa's deal with her evil counterpart is not simply that she will help her exact her revenge, but that she will also be granted a new life with a better mother: Rose.

3) In this case, ending has two possibilities:

a.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. However, because Alessa was motivated by hate and revenge and let her evil side take over (as well as Rose's part in the revenge), Rose and Sharon (Alessa #2) are doomed to live in the purgatory-like realm that Dark Alessa created. Therefore, no one really wins.

or

b.) Alessa's plan works and she is granted a new mother in Rose. Now with Sharon's memories to work with after reuniting with her, Alessa can extend her sphere of influence and create a world just like the one Sharon and Rose lived in, where they can stay forever. In other words, Alessa doesn't want Rose to leave her alternate dimension; she wants to keep Rose all to herself.

Hope this helps. :)

Although it is possible Rose and Sharon were dead at the end, heres what I think happened.

In the Silent Hill games, there are 3 levels of silent hill. The first is the Normal Silent hill. The second is the one that Rose & Cybil were in for most of the movie (A la Henry from Silent Hill 1) kind of like a Purgatory. The Last level of Silen hill is The Hellish one, which is created by Alessa to punish the cultists (in the film version anyways). I don't believe that Rose/Cybil/ Sharon were dead because if they were, wouldnt the cops have found thier cars? Instead Alessa pulled them into the "purgatory" Silent Hill, (though i'm not sure why she took Cybil) Anyways, When Rose and Sharon return home they remains in a "Purgatory" state, and Sharon (who was a part of Alessa) is a unified being of Alessa, Sharon, and the demon.

I know my explanation is probably confusing, but thats the only alternate I could come up with, other than there dead. Also, the whole movie is less confusing if you play Silent Hill 1, at least I found it to be.

Dark Alessa is a Doppelganger of Alessa she herself created, to help reconcile her growing hate and vengeance. She explains that Sharon is a split of her innocence and good, while she herself is the vengeful, disgusted other, and the decaying, living body the original form. When Alessa and Sharon reunite, she and Rose become trapped in Alessa's "otherworld", that foggy shrouded world, which the good side of Alessa created to hide in. It's not a real place, but a sort of limbo world. That's why, although they return home, Chris can't see them - it's still part of Alessa's spell, to keep her newly reunited self safe. Sometimes one world can affect another - Chris smelling Rose's perfume, the door opening.. They (Chris and Rose) do not actually see each other, that's a camera trick. If you pay attention, you'll see it.

Source(s):
Also - in the 4 SH games, all but one of the main characters is male, only one female. Technically, if they wanted to be true to the first game, Chris should have been the one to take Sharon to Silent Hill - in the game, her mother had died a couple of years before. They (Rose and Alessa/Sharon) are not dead, they're trapped in limbo. Foggy Silent Hill, if you like, between the real word and the dark world of Alessa's nightmares.

If you watch some trailers or enter the site you can see that it says 'once you entered the silent hill there's no turning back',that's why Rose,Sharon and her husband never met each other again.
Now,the girl looked like Sharon coz:
We know that Alessa had created 2 parts of her after what happened to her (was goin' to burn...) a dark one,the girl looked like Sharon, and a good one,Sharon. That's why both were the same!

because when the mother told her daughter to close her ea the daughter didn't so the girl that had cursed the whole village went into the girl so the mother was trapped as well in another plane then the living. The daughter looked like the dead girl because she was her daughter conceived after being rapped.and put up for adoption that is why the little girl is so important to the dead one

from my understanding the mom, kid, and the cop were already dead when they woke up from the "accident". So their spirits were trapped in this hell when they crossed over to the town of silent hill. And it took the resolve of the evil spirit of the abused girl to finally let go of the town and its residents. That included the mom and child but instead of them being killed, they were sent back to their home where they would "haunt" the dad with their presence. And both mother and child would wait for dad until he crossed over. That's my opinion.

AARGH. See, the mum and daughter are both dead? And the girl is possessed by the demon alr. And the demon created this illusion of their house and everything. The mum doesn't noe she's dead of course. So the ending = the mum and daughter "live" in their own world (heaven or whatever you wanna call it) And the husband, he's just at home.. but he can "sense" their presence sorta thing.. but they're dead already. I think they died cuz the girl wenta look at the demon when the mum warned her not to? Yup... it's a sorta sad ending.
