rust may have to be sanded down, but stains can be cleaned easily. Try "never-dul" or "brasso" you can usually find them in the cleaning isle of the grocery store or hardware store.

well you can use spirit or very weak acid it will clean and rust and stains very quickly this way is also used to remove rust and stains of cars in the factory

can get those polisher for metals (for brass,bronze etc..) at hardware store, quite effective
