I lived there for 7 years and saw most of the state during that time. It depends where you're starting from--are you doing a road trip? It can make quite a bit of difference. If you're coming up from VA on the WV Turnpike you'll go through places like Beckley and Princeton. It's a coal area and frankly I found it depressing to be there. Of course, Dwayne (can't think of his last name at the minute, but he played Gilligan) lived in that area as well as a couple other celebrities so it must have something to offer.
Depending on where you'd be coming from in Ohio you can go through Huntington (home of Marshall University) or Parkersburg and end up in Charleston, the state capitol. It's a beautiful, scenic area. Cross Lanes area, if I remember correctly, which is close to Chas. is the home of the guy who won the multi-million dollar lottery a few years ago. The State Capitol is a beautiful building. The University of Charleston has its campus across from it on the other side of the Kanawha River. I don't know if the restaurant is still open or not, but Humphreys on the West Side had the best chicken-n-dumplings I've ever had anywhere.
If I remember my geography, if you were to come down from MD, you'd be in the Shenadoah Valley. Gorgeous country.
Then there's coming through KY and I just drew a complete blank. I guess I've been away a lot longer than I remember.
Morgantown is the home of WVU and is known for its Indian burial mounds.
I was glad to leave there for health and personal reasons, but I went back several years ago and found I actually missed it and had many fond memories. I'd like to take my grandson there someday. So, I guess I'd have to say yes it's worth it. But, doesn't every state have something to offer that you might not expect?

i can tell you that west virginia is one of the most beautiful states that i have ever lived in. we have all sorts of things to do here. hiking, rafting, skiing, hunting, camping , fishing, etc... not to mention the tourists spots. we have caves that run all through these hills. old abandon coal mines that are opened for public vewing. we have alot to offer. alot of great stars was raised here. bob denver was born not far from where i live now. west virginia gets alot of bad publicity at times. but its nothing like that here. the great hatfield and mcoy feud started here. so, in all we have all you could want here. freindly people, good down home cooking, and a great family getaway that you will sure to enjoy.

YES!!!
the day hikes in the mountains are wonderful!.. plus, you'll run into less people on the trails just because there's less people in the state..
if you're just going to drive and hang out in little towns, you can pretty much do that anywhere...
but w. va. has some of the best white water, hiking, biking and caving in the east...

If you do, you'll probably see some gorgeous scenery. I lived there for a couple of years, and the scenery was quite nice.
