In reality; the royal family would have this type of relationship; shielded, secreted, beyond peering eyes; as in past and current royal families continue to do for positions of propriety. The King would either abdicate; or take a wife and have his man on the side. His title would not be significant. However; he might be introduced as best friend, knight, or given some type of unofficial titled of associate or even representative.

Anyone get the reference?

It depends on the state. Some states allow marriage for love, others allow marriage for politics.

a Prince Consort??

But if a king was gay, wouldn't there be laws so that the king could not marry his gay boyfriend. That I do not know.

However if that were true, the tabloids would be in a frenzy.
