In reality; the royal family would have this type of relationship; shielded, secreted, beyond peering eyes; as in past and current royal families continue to do for positions of propriety. The King would either abdicate; or take a wife and have his man on the side. His title would not be significant. However; he might be introduced as best friend, knight, or given some type of unofficial titled of associate or even representative.

The hope of alliance through marriage with one of the other great royal families would be maintained and the boyfriend would just be a "concubine."
Anyone get the reference?
It depends on the state. Some states allow marriage for love, others allow marriage for politics.

if you are looking for a serious answer: probably depends on the country. I think Denmark and the Netherlands are the only 2 countries that have monarchies and allow gay marriage.

a Prince Consort??
But if a king was gay, wouldn't there be laws so that the king could not marry his gay boyfriend. That I do not know.
However if that were true, the tabloids would be in a frenzy.
