I'm 25, and I learned swimming not long ago. In my opinion, a lot of people don't have fear of water but are just only afraid of getting drown (unless you have proven of having some sort of illnesses or phoebia) I have no problem swimming now and I'm in love of it; I just need to work on my techniques. You have to have confidence in yourself and tell youself that you can do it! Take swimming classes with definately help. They will start off in shallow water and teach you the basics. For me, I got a private instructor, and it took me 5 lessons to learn swimming. In addition to that, I practice all the time. You have to look at it this way - you will not get drown in a pool because lifeguards are always there; just don't go to the deep water until you're comfortable with it. Also, get a pair of goggle because I know a lot of people get scared in the water because they can't see.

i had water fear. But finally could learn to swim length wise. Start at the shallow end and take lessons from swimming instructors. Do breathing exercise. Swim breadth wise only, as water in the centre is very deep. and finally practice.

Go to a phobia specialist. They can design a program to fit your needs. Personally, I love swimming but only in my neighbour's private pool or certain lakes. I avoid public swimming pools. Old men pee in them, it's disgusting. In fact, my mother-in-law once stayed at a hotel in Vancouver that posted a sign, sick as it is, that read, 'We wouldn't go swimming in your toilet; don't pee in our pool." The lake is polluted and there is a strange weed in it brought by some jerk from Ontario and his high-end yacht. Also, they dump chemicals in it and the swampy mud beneath leaves a film on the skin. The only people who hang out at the city park are homeless people on drugs, not my kind of crowd.
