i am Egyptian and you can wear whatever you like but it depend on the place you are going to , for example you cant wander around in some low class or poor areas while you are wearing shorts
but in general it's quite safe to wear whatever you want

It is only tourists that will dress that way and that may be one reason they stare at you. (A lot of the tourists wear very revealing clothing and they are sometimes thought to be prostitutes and this is why they stare.) It is OK to dress this way but be prepared for the stares and you may possibly get harassed by the men (nothing much a joke, stared at or maybe even a proposition. They wont harm you however, so don't be afraid). If you are planning to visit a mosque (like the Muhammed Ali mosque in Cairo) you should be dressed in full length pants or skirt with arms covered and cover your hair for the time that you are inside.
I do recommend visiting the mosque because it is beautiful and from the side you can get an amazing view of Cairo. Most of the time what you are planning to wear is just fine for tourists though. Don't wear anything that shows cleavage and wear at least short sleeves and Capri's.

I am going to repeat what a lot of people say, but as an American woman who lived in Egypt for a couple months - just be respectful and cover up. I wore ankle length pants and light jackets in the summer. The places it gets hot in the summer is towards Aswan and Luxor. If you are staying near Cairo or North, then you can cover up and be comfortable.

BUT if you are to visit any holy places, bring a headscarf. It is plain respect. If you don't, they might make you wear a green over coat, and trust me, you do not want to.

It's a beautiful country and the people are kind. But as a foreigner there is no need to draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Respect the culture, and you will be respected in return.

The only place I would recommend wearing Capri's are within the confines of the hotel.

Cairo is one of the world's great megacities. As lovely as it is crazy, and as rich in old finery since it is half dilapidated, Cairo tends to be a city that individuals love and hate in equivalent actions so find out in which band you will soon be with assistance from that place hotelbye . In Cairo you will see, beyond the current hubbub, a record that spans centuries. Saturated in vigour, Cairo is where you really get a sense for Egyptian street life and no trip to Egypt is total with out a remain in the town Arabs call Umm al-Dunya (The Mother of the World). The definitely staggering collection of antiquities exhibited in Cairo's Egyptian Museum makes it one of the world's good museums and definitely a area for everyone's to visit.

It depends on a few things. In the hotels you can wear whatever you like, when visiting historical places, I like to wear long slight clothes, for example long (usually white) cotton trousers / skirts and slight shirts - not strapped but ones with sleeves. When I wear sleeveless tops or shirts, I cover my shoulders with a scarf. Don't feel embrassed, because people are looking at you, they are curious, and they are also interested in different people. Egyptian people whom I met are friendly, I remember sitting in a spice-shop each and every evening drinking tea and talking about each other with 3-4 boys about the difference of our cultures, traditions, hobbies, work, free time, food, religion... anything. Of course, try to avoid places that you are afraid of or doesn't have a positive impact on you, but as long as you act in a respectful way, there is really nothing to worry about.

I wear capri pants, and sleeveles shirts as often as I want in summer here in Cairo. I would assume in Alexandria these are even more common because people are used to tourists and citizens of other cities of Egypt to come for the sea breeze and summer holidays.
But of course I don't do that in very poor areas, to which I do not go anyway!

I've never personally been there, but my grandmother has. She said it's actually better to dress in long breezy light colored clothing rather than shorts and tee shirts. Not only is it more respectful of the conservative nature of the people there, you are less likely to sunburn and actually stay cooler this way.
I hope this helps.
Try long skirts and long sleeve cotton tops.
