it all depends on your needs.

if you are a student and are on a tight budget, consider investing in those centrino single core laptops that are on sale right now. since they're phasing out single cores, they're bound to be really cheap. i've received good feedback on the asus and HP centrino laptops. i don't recommend buying a clone laptop coz for one, its a bit difficult to find parts for laptops, so you're better off with branded ones with a service center near you.

if you work and need a laptop with high graphic capabilities and reliability, and budget is not a problem, then consider IMACs or preferrably IBM/le novo. if you want to go for light and compact, consider a fujitsu lifebook.

Go with an Apple. Get the next Windows OS now, yes it is the current OS X, which Apple is replacing.

Apple is the way to go for performance, reliability, ingenuity. It can run Windows if you need to, but it is a stable virus free OS.

Leaves any Windows machine in the dust.
