I have just been offered full time employment in an advertising agency, as an entry level media planning and production assistant. They have asked me how much I would expect to get paid and I have no idea. It is in Newcastle, not Sydney.

Do some research, talk to contacts in the industry. If your contacts do not live in the same city as your new job, go online and check for cost-of-living adjustment. From what I know ad agencies usually have low starting salary.

Find out what's most important to you and negotiate with that in mind. If you like flexible hours, maybe you will accept a lower salary if the company can offer that. Also consider benefits offered as those are considered wage expense on the employer's side. If someone's paying for your insurance, you may also bargain for a higher salary by declining to participate in the company's program.

Last word: never name the price first. You should stress what you can bring to the company (education, interpersonal skills, creative horsepower) and then state that you would accept the fair amount for your qualifications.

In the U.S. it would be a near minimum-wage job.
