Wine is sweet, revenge is better.

Good question

Normally no, because getting even means we want the other person to feel the same way about us. Taking revenge includes letting the person know that a revenge has been taken, why and by whom. And of course it is mean - when you feel mean, you go to the limit.

However, sometimes we may be even meaner - and decide not to disclose our hand in order to avoid further complications - for instance, if getting even involves committing a punishable crime.

If we know how mean is revenge, some of us may be wise enough to let it go - but very very few - when we feel mean, we are really mean !!

I would not go so far as "getting even" with someone, regardless of the status of their knowing or not knowing. Revenge is an outflow of hatred, and serves no purpose except to perpetuate hatred. If you believe in reincarnation, as I do, the best revenge is to live a good life. Within the oldest texts of most of the world's religions is the admonition to forgive, and that to do so "heaps coals of fire" upon the heads of those who have done the wrong. I quote the Christian Bible here. I have found this to be true. Don't "let it go". Don't exact revenge. Forgive. Totally and willingly, forgive. It is much more satisfying, and will heal your soul.

I think either way it could be considered revenge. If all you care about is something bad happening to them, it doesn't matter if they know it was you or not. But if you are only doing it for the satisfaction of them knowing you got revenge, then it does matter.

I used to think revenge was my right.

Then I went through a divorce. I was cheated on, he asked for the divorce but made it nasty for me. I countered every nast thing and tried to top it with something nastier...until I just got tired of it.

Revenge is a waste of energy and it shows that you're still embroiled in the conflict and its proof prima facie that you still care about what the other party thinks.

I no longer wish him ill, I've filled my time and energies on myself and my new life. Pursuing revenge would only be living my life for someone I want nothing more to do with.

Spend your time pursuing your own dreams and edification and let the other party wallow in the misery of their own misery and mediocrity.

Getting screwed over= cost being majorly po'ed and possibly worse
Plotting revenge= cost zero dollars
Getting revenge and seeing the look on the assholes face=PRICELESS!

The best way to do it is by doing it in such a way that they KNOW you did it, but can't prove it. If you knew the person for a long time then they know your style..they will be 99% sure it was you, but still have no proof. It can't get any better than that. ;)

No real offense, and I'm weary tonight of NON philosophical questions here.

Define,,,even to yourself, the benefits to SELF,,, Vengance. How will it serve you, in a positive, progressive way?

Almost daily I hope for our species to evolve to a point at which time a question like this will not exist.

the fact of them knowing is what makes revenge "temporarily" satisfying.

I personally have to say let it go. But if you are petty enough to stoop to that level you should make sure they know it was you. Otherwise there is no point.
