Wow! Are you in for a change!!!
You likely already know about the climate, which is going to be vastly different from anything you experience in South Carolina. The humidity is much lower, summer and winter, and of course, the winters are much colder.
The biggest difference is going to be the length of the days and nights. In the dead of winter, night is a 24-hour business. In mijd-summer, you have 24-hour days. In fact, there is a baseball tournament in mid-summer that is played round the clock, because the sun never sets. That also means drive in movies aren't very popular because it's too light to see them in the summer and to cold to sit through them in the winter.
That said, you'll find it an interesting place to be. The scenery is completely different, and you'll see new varieties of wildlife. The fishing is exceptional. So do enjoy that.
Northerners are friendly people, so don't be standoffish -- join whatever group interests you, and there are clubs for everything up north. It's a great way to meet your new neighbors.
Oh, one other thing. The first time you see the Northern Lights, you won't believe your eyes. They're God's handiwork on the sky!

WOW, my best friend just got back from Alaska. She lived there for a few years and she is from Ware Shoals, SC. We are neighbors! I am sure she would love to give you some information about Alaska. She loved it there, but became homesick for the south. She has some amazing stories from her time there. I will get you information from her if you need it. Good luck

Winterize your car 1st thing when you get up there... make sure you get involved in winter activities (keeps you from getting cabin feaver)... and travel as much as you can... say yes to adventures (hopped on a puddle jumper with someone to deliver the mail to the islands south of Kenia once).

it's dark all the time in the winter, light in the summer.

It's also pretty cold and I'm in Canada saying that!!!!

Anyone I meet from there loves it though and they hunt and fish a lot. They like a slow paced life too.
