Kobe changed his number to 24 because that was the number he began his high school career with. But, back in high school, he changed his number to 33, out of repsect for his father Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, who also wore number 33 while in high school. But, when Kobe reached the NBA, he couldn't wear 33 because it had been retired by Kareem. Kobe chose 8 because it was the number he wore as a kid when he played in Italy, and also his number from Nikes ABCD camp (143) added up to 8, that's why he chose it.
He said his changing numbers was meant to signify the start of the second half of his career, which leads a lot of people to think that Kobes game may be going to change around a bit.

RE:
Why did Kobe change his jersey number?
I saw him in a commercial with jersey #24 - that was him, right? Did he change his jersey number? Wasn't he #8 or some single digit number before?

Kobe wore 24 in high school and plus he said 24 stood for 24/7. For him basketball is 24 hours a day 7 days a week. For all the Kobe haters stop hating. Hate when u become a legend.

What a joke...
It's about greed.... Kobe had a shoe contract before his rape trial. He was dropped, but the company put into production "Crazy 8s" or "8s" or something like that... He didn't want anyone else to make any money, if he didn't get a piece.
