to Christy: there is a huge difference between a home based business through a network marketing based business and stepping out into the small business world. I have done both and much prefer the "safety net" of an already established company. However, that does not imply that consultants do not have to work at their business to be successful. Anyone who tells you that just by signing up, you'll become wildly successful, is lying to you. But there is much more freedom in doing business this way, which is why the direct selling association is seeing such tremendous growth. I have an Equity report done by CitiGroup specifically on network marketing based businesses. It is definitely an industry worth looking into, and there are plenty of different companies to suit anyone. For me it was Arbonne ( I prefer the white Mercedes to the Pink Cadillac and can get behind the ideology of Pure, Safe, and Beneficial.)

First of all, successful women entrepreneurs do NOT have more time to spend with their families and pursue recreational activities. Most women put in 10-15 hour days working their business. Then there is still housework...........
I have been self employed for over 30 years, I don't have 'free' time. When I am not working, I am doing housework.
As far as Mary Kay retailers, talk to the ones who are driving the new 'pink' cars. Ask them how many hours a day they spend working in order to receive the freebies. More than you realize.
If you are talking about a successful part time sales as in Mary Kay, who is supplementing her husband's income, sure you can do that. But those women are looking at $500- 1000 a month---not including expenses.
You need to do a little more research. Contact the home office of Mary Kay. You will get a whole new story on how many hours a successful salesperson puts in her job.

Just a tip to make your paper "fantastic"...get some quotes from scholarly journals and/or books that go against what you're arguing. In other words, find evidence that states that women entrepreneurs do not have rewarding lives. Then, prove this statement wrong by using your first-hand opinions and other research you have done. Teachers love it when you do this.
Good luck! :)

Just an add on to everything others are replying. I had two parties this week. So spent approximately 5-6 hours working. I also had a fundraiser turn in since we have a fundraising line, my profit at the end of the week was over $1,000. Yes that was for 6 hours of work, plus I cleaned my house, went to a pto meeting, went to the dentist, relaxed with my hubby in the evening and enjoyed life!
And remember , that was over $1,000 clear net profit! Yes, net profit!

I'm a consultant for the Body shop at home, i have three young children and my husband works through the day. I love doing this job as I can be at home during they day with my kids and even take them with me to interview people and go out doing creative work to help my business grow. I go out at night to do my partys just before my kids are going to bed and am out for two and a half hours or so at my party where on average I earn 50 pound a time excluding all my expenses.

do people who work for Mary Kay really count? because don't they have everything set up for them as far as how Mary Kay works. isn't that different than setting up your own business with your own ideas from scratch? i am just questioning that aspect of your research. another thing i wonder... if it is a small store where the woman owns it & she is one of few employees, how does she get to spend more time with her family/hobbies? most spend a lot of time at their place of business. perhaps it would be better to narrow it down to those who have businesses that are home-based? (reason for saying this: i know people who sell mary kay & people who own their own store-- i see a HUGE difference between them. but it could be a coincidence).
