Today, 135 years to the day after the last American President (Ulysses S. Grant) suspended habeas corpus, President Bush signed into law the Military Commissions Act of 2006. At its worst, the legislation allows President Bush or Donald Rumsfeld to declare anyone — US citizen or not — an enemy combatant, lock them up and throw away the key without a chance to prove their innocence in a court of law. In other words, every thing the Founding Fathers fought the British empire to free themselves of was reversed and nullified with the stroke of a pen, all under the guise of the War on Terror.

Proper tribunals? What are you talking about? What's proper about them?

What's proper about them? The act also allows the President to determine what constitutes torture. So now he can have Americna citizens tortured, if he pleases. Even if your into that, why would you give so much power to one person? Do you honestly think this won't be misused in the future? Even if you totally trust the current administration, what about those holding power in 50 or 100 years? How do you know you can trust them?

What!?! That is an outrage. This essentially gives the government the freedom to do whatever they want, to whoever they want, without any degree of accountability whatsoever. When will the people of America learned that their very freedom, the thing they touted about most, are under assault by the government and idiotic baboon they voted into place? They think 350+ years of democracy meant that their rights and freedoms are unassailable, when will they learn that their complacency is allowing the government to pervade into and control more and more of their lives, directly contrary to the spirit of the constitution? Right now the US has already imprison and torture hundred, if not thousands of innocent people from the middle east, under the least pretext, soon they’ll start on their own citizens. All of this is ignored by the citizens of US because they think that it won’t happen to them. When will they realize that they are the next targeted demographic? Thank god I am a Canadian. (Assasination is sounding like a better and better idea.)

This is about the darkest day in our history, and nobody really knows it. The news media concentrates on congressman Foley being horny for a 16 year old teenager, and rights that have been the status quo since 1215 are gone.
I hope it gets challenged and thrown out soon.
This president is ruining our country and our previous honorable perception in the eyes of the world.
The only time Habeas Corpus was suspended was when we were under DIRECT attack.
It's a shame assassination is illegal.

It is the first time i have ever feared what Bush would actually do. I have always hated him but now i truly afraid of what might happen. Keep your eyes open for strange things, hopefully something will stop all of this.

Everyone is for these laws because they think it will never apply to them. Until the one day they need one of those scum bag liberal defense attorneys to get them out of a jam.

Or, it allows our government to conduct proper tribunals on people who have been caught in the act of trying to harm the United States regardless of if they are a citizen or not. Because little johnny walker got less that 20 years for helping bring about the murder of over 3000 people. That's crap!

And according to you, every Japanese or German soldier should have been entitled to liberal so-called "fair treatment" and you would have considered it repulsive that they were considered enemy combatants and shot on the battlefield.
I think that liberals are close to being enemy combatants, for their traitorism, sedition and sympathy for the enemy.
