Take some Archaeology classes. Lots of ancient Germanic tribes and those along the Russian steppes and so on were doing this technique too thousands of years ago.

Many Nordics were known to bury fresh meat in the snow and ice to save it, and hide it from scavengers!

goes back a few thousand years, and well before T.V.!
